Yesinia Carde became part of Sheriff’s Office Human Trafficking Task Force six months ago and said law enforcement is still learning how to recognize these well-hidden cases. She said the public can be instrumental in helping law enforcement spot when slavery is present.
“(Try to) notice when there are a lot of children in a home that don’t go to school or are not allowed to play or socialize. Another thing to look for is adults that are not allowed to go into public much or are not allowed to speak,” she said, adding that sometimes the domestic violence calls officers go on can involve slavery situations.
“This unfortunately has been around a long time and we are seeing women who are brought over by coyotes (people who smuggle illegal immigrants into the country) promising them the world,” Carde said. “Whether they are forced into the labor trade, servants in the home or restaurant, or forced into prostitution (it is slavery).”

The city’s last strip club was closed recently —and possibly forever — after detectives said they uncovered organized drug dealing and prostitution in the club’s VIP rooms over the past four months.
City police, working with state and federal agencies, have charged at least 30 employees of Platinum Showgirls with more than 50 counts, including racketeering, trafficking in oxycodone, sale of cocaine and prostitution.
The club owner, Matt Barrow, 52, of Lake Park, was arrested on charges of racketeering, felony public nuisance, using his property for drug sales and profiting from known prostitution occurring on his property. He was held Saturday on $26,000 bail.

The already sordid tale of the Rev. David Dueppen and his baby’s mother, former stripper Beatrice Hernandez, turned even tawdrier Tuesday as the two traded intimate and bizarre allegations in a Miami-Dade courtroom.
Dueppen said he’d been abused as a child, making him unable to resist Hernandez’s demands for sex.
Hernandez said Dueppen threatened to “disappear her” by sending monks in brown robes to “shoot” her if she revealed the baby’s existence to the church.
The three-hour hearing in domestic violence court ended in a draw: A restraining order was dismissed, and both parties agreed to stay away from each other while continuing their custody battle for 11-month-old Marilyn Epiphany.

A Miami-Dade judge on Tuesday ordered a former stripper and a disgraced Catholic priest — who are involved in a custody dispute over their baby daughter — to stay away from each other.
After a three-hour hearing, former stripper Beatrice Hernandez agreed to dismiss her claim of domestic violence against the Rev. David Dueppen, and both agreed to stay away from each other unless ordered otherwise by the court. Hernandez, 41, claimed in court filings in September that Dueppen choked her during an argument over paternity of their baby.
Dueppen, 42, has acknowledged that he is the father of little Marilyn Epiphany Hernandez, born in January. In a separate court case, Dueppen is seeking majority custody of the baby girl.
The case drew widespread attention in September, only months after TV priest Alberto Cutié admitted to having a girlfriend and switched to the Episcopal church.

CBS 4 cameras captured the SWAT team serving a search warrant at a Hallandale Beach home where a woman was arrested for dealing prescription drugs. Deputies said they earlier this year they seized hundreds of prescription pills, several guns and tens of thousands of dollars from the same home.
Deputies also conducted numerous street-level drug deals, catching people buying and selling narcotics.
In addition to drugs, deputies also worked to bust prostitutes.
At a Dania Beach hotel, deputies set up surveillance equipment in a room and began contacting women on websites who offer companionship or sex. In an adjoining room, an undercover cop waited for the women to arrive.
One woman showed up and is accused of offering to perform a sex act on the undercover deputy for $180. After the money changed hands and she began to undress, deputies burst in to arrest her.
Later, deputies arrested a man accused of being her pimp.
