Police are continuing their investigation, but Ashamalla said she doesn’t have much hope the machine will be recovered.
The organization is probably out of business “unless something fantastic happens,” she said.
Ashamalla said the machine was not insured. She said she tried to insure it but that Sunrise’s nonprofit status was an impediment.
Ashamalla said she doesn’t know why anyone would take the highly specialized Palomar Q-YAG 5 laser system.
“This is not something you take to a local pawnbroker,” she said, adding that she suspects the thief had a prearranged buyer.

But when she walked to the back room, it was empty. The machine was gone. Police investigators later interviewed a passerby who saw someone roll it away around 1 a.m., said Capt. Steve Ruiz of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart station. “They were pushing a large device,” Ruiz said.

Ashamalla said the machine was not insured. She said that she tried to insure it, but that Sunrise’s nonprofit status was an impediment. A used version in today’s market might cost $25,000, she said, far beyond the group’s meager resources.
With the loss of the machine, “all that’s here is a broken window and an empty room,” she said.

Red Sox: Jon Lester pitched six strong innings in his fifth spring start, helping Boston beat a Blue Jays split-squad 3-2. Lester allowed two unearned runs and six hits, struck out five and walked two. Jonathan Papelbon, Hideki Okajima and Ramon Ramirez finished up with a scoreless inning apiece.
Yankees: Alex Rodriguez’s meeting Friday with federal investigators probing a Canadian doctor was delayed, and the third baseman remained at spring training with the team rather than traveling to Buffalo. The meeting was postponed by mutual consent, a person familiar with the delay said on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. The meeting has not yet been rescheduled, the person said.
Braves: Suspended a minor-league pitcher who was charged with two prostitution-related misdemeanors after a sting conducted not far from the team’s spring training facility. Right-hander Deunte Heath bonded out of jail Friday. Kissimmee police spokeswoman Stacie Miller says the 24-year-old ballplayer was arrested Thursday night when he allegedly responded to Internet prostitution ads and agreed to pay $75 for a sex act.

Aiming to control its future development, the city spent $385,000 on land formerly occupied by a mobile home park.
The city council on Wednesday voted to use Community Redevelopment Agency funds to buy 1.1 acres at Peters Road and State Road 7, where the Pine Ridge Trailer Park once stood.
The park, with dozens of rental mobile homes, closed two or three years ago. The land would have been sold at an April 8 foreclosure auction if the council hadn’t acted.
Temporarily, it could become a passive park; long-term, it could be sold for commercial development.
Councilman Bob Levy said the need to control what happens at the site is critical, considering its history.
“It was the quintessential trashy [trailer] park,” Levy said. “It was a harbor of prostitution and drug deals on a regular basis.”

… If you really analyze what happened in this case,” Benjamin told the jury, “he got paid for things he legitimately and above board did while he was not a commissioner.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Kaplan painted a much different picture, describing how Salesman sold his office, knowingly associated with purported criminals and never once shied from a bribe.
“He never resisted,” Kaplan said of Salesman’s allegedly accepting of more than $7,000 in bribes over the course of the FBI’s investigation. “He never said, `I gotta give you this money back.’ Instead, what he did was he put it in his pocket.”
Kaplan said he intends to present Salesman’s tax returns as evidence to show he wasn’t really working as a consultant.
The prosecutor called as his first witness FBI Special Agent Anthony Velazquez, who testified that he first met Salesman at a strip club called Diamonds in North Miami Beach in March 2005.

Prosecutors say Salesman was still bound by city and state rules and that he took the cash when he was a commissioner.
The defense played lengthier portions of the recordings where Salesman talked about legitimate development opportunities in Miramar. He repeatedly said, in colorful language, that his position didn’t allow him to make backroom deals and that he didn’t want to be around when the contractors “greased palms.”
“You can’t do that in today’s world. Someone is going to prison and I ain’t going to prison,” Salesman said on tape.
FBI special agent Anthony Velazquez testified he met Salesman when an informant introduced them at a strip club. Velazquez posed as a slick criminal who wanted to launder money and help a contractor get government contracts in South Florida. Velazquez introduced the politician to other “contractors” and said they’d been involved in arson and insurance fraud.

James Benjamin and Daniel Aaronson, Salesman’s court-appointed attorneys, argued that their client tried to dissuade the undercover agents from paying off politicians or brokering “back room deals,” and that Salesman acted legitimately as a consultant when he brokered two construction jobs for FBI agents between April 2005 and October 2007.
“If you really analyze what happened in this case,” Benjamin told the jury, “he got paid for things he legitimately and above board did while he was not a commissioner.”
