Benjamin said FBI agents spent months gaining Salesman’s confidence — attending his 50th birthday party, feting him at IHOP, Bahama Breeze and Hooters, and drinking together at Hallandale Beach strip clubs Scarlett’s Cabaret and Cheetah — before they finally cajoled the former commissioner into selling his office.
U.S. District Judge James I. Cohn denied Salesman’s motion to dismiss, saying the defense failed to establish “racial animus” by the FBI.
“The bottom line is African-American officials who did not commit crimes were not charged,” Cohn said, adding that Gallagher, who is white, was charged as part of the FBI’s investigation.
…
A few months later, Budhoo introduced Salesman to FBI Special Agent Anthony Velazquez at a North Miami Beach strip club, records say. Velazquez posed as Budhoo’s boss and supplier of the purportedly stolen goods.

According to court filings by federal prosecutors, the journal contains names of material witnesses and additional victims — “hundreds,” according to a lawyer familiar with its contents. Its existence was only just revealed in an obstruction of justice case against Alfredo Rodriguez, who worked for Epstein as a property manager.
Rodriguez, who originally told police he had no knowledge of his former boss’ crimes, stole the journal from Epstein and tried to sell it for $50,000. He was caught, and the journal confiscated by authorities, when a targeted buyer alerted police.
Had they possessed the journal at the time Epstein was originally charged, federal prosecutors say, they would not have forgone the grand jury process, abandoned federal charges, and offered Epstein a deal.
The high-flying financier agreed to plead guilty to procuring a minor for prostitution and soliciting. Part of the deal included a so-called non-persecution agreement.

New details about the contents of the journal were released this week when Alfredo Rodriguez, who worked asr a property manager for the Palm Beach resident, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for lying to federal agents when asked if he had any information about his former boss’ criminal activity. He later tried to sell the journal he stole from Epstein for $50,000 to an unidentified person, who alerted authorities, according to court records.
As part of the plea agreement, federal prosecutors said the journal “contains information material to the Epstein investigation, including the names of material witnesses and additional victims.”
“Had the items been produced in response to the inquiries of state or federal authorities … the materials would have been presented to the federal grand jury,” federal prosecutors wrote.
Instead, prosecutors short-circuited the grand jury investigation and cut a deal with Epstein. They agreed not to pursue federal charges if he didn’t contest prostitution-related felonies in state court. The money manager pleaded guilty in July 2008 to procuring a minor for prostitution and soliciting prostitution. He served 13 months of an 18-month sentence.

He faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty of the charges. Police arrested him late Tuesday night at a Florida condominium owned by his family.
LeVin has denied he was driving the 2007 Porsche that killed British businessmen Craig Lewis Elford, 39, and Kenneth Watkinson, 48. Police say the men were struck when one of two speeding sports cars lost control and veered onto the sidewalk on which the men were walking.
An affidavit released earlier this week by Fort Lauderdale police detailed what investigators surmised happened on Feb. 13, 2009, the night of the wreck. Much of the investigation centers on LeVin and friend Derek Cook’s cell phone records. Police said LeVin was celebrating a friend’s birthday and had drinks at a Florida restaurant, a strip club and a bar.

The measure is controversial – even drawing opposition from anti-discrimination advocates – but it appears to have strong support in the Legislature, thanks in part to backing from Broward County’s Republican sheriff, Al Lamberti. If approved, the bill (HB11) would make violent attacks against the homeless a hate crime that carries enhanced penalties. Currently, hate-crime categories include race, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation.
Attacks against the homeless have been a serious issue locally, especially given how many homeless are killed in the Orlando area. The City Beautiful has been named as the “meanest” when it comes to the homeless by the National Coalition for the Homeless. And it might be the most violent for the homeless as well.
Most of the homeless who die are not killed because they have no home. Some live risky lifestyles of drug abuse and prostitution that make them more vulnerable to violence.

As parents and students tour college campuses this spring, Fiel and ADT recommend the following campus safety tips to help parents and students make that important college choice with safety in mind:
Check campus crime rates and statistics. The federal Jeanne Clery Act of 1998 requires publicly funded schools and colleges to publish annual crime statistics for their campuses. All college students should be able to check campus safety by obtaining crime rates for their potential campus before visiting. Many campuses post this report on the police or security pages of their Web sites.
Make sure the campus offers police escort services. Escort services, provided by community service or police officers, can add another layer of security for students who might find themselves studying late on campus. Escort services can help students navigate their campuses more safely and should be made available around the clock.
