Tinsley Ellis performs at the Back Room in Boca Raton. (Veda Jo Jenkins / sflimages.com)
Dixie Highway is dark along this stretch in Boca Raton. There doesn’t seem to be much of anything except freight cars on the train tracks. There is a bright light up ahead: it reads The Back Room. Looking more like a last pit stop on a lonely highway, the Back Room is deceiving. Inside playing his soul out on the guitar is legendary blues artist Tinsley Ellis.
When you enter you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, perhaps transported to an old brothel in New Orleans. The walls are painted red; the couches are red too and on the walls are plastered with multitudes of framed art of women. What is this place?

Earlier today, one of the women, a 27-year-old now living in Palm Beach Gardens, testified of her experience. In a flat, calm voice, she recounted responding to a meet-up request via livelinks.com. The man, she said, flashed a badge, said he was a cop, tried to cuff her, and told her that she had to give him something in return for not arresting her for soliciting.
The woman said she conceded to having sex after seeing a gun and a badge, just to be able to get out of there.
“I thought I was in deep doo-doo to be honest with ya,” she testified.
Afterwards, Martin threw the condom out the window, she said, and she escaped from the vehicle with it.
“At the time a red light went off in my head, this must be the stupidest cop ever!” she testified.
The woman, a former stripper, acknowledged having been paid for sex before, carried condoms in her purse, serviced people’s fetishes, and advertising herself on Craigslist as 100% USDA Beef.

She also acknowledged having been paid for sex before, and hosted fetish parties for those she met online.
Such a party, she said, might cater to a man who just likes toes.
“I think my toes are suckable,” she said. “I think my toes are cute.”
The second victim, who lives in St. Petersburg, failed to show up this morning. Assistant State Attorney Reid Scott declined to answer any questions about her absence following Martin’s plea.
Scott argued to jurors that while society may disapprove of their lifestyle, the law does not allow the women to be victimized by those who regard them as trash.
Martin was adjudicated guilty, making him now a convicted felon.
“The truth is he just didn’t pay for the prostitutes,” said his brother. “I’m not saying it’s right or it’s wrong. But that’s it, he just didn’t pay.”

Three Broward County men pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to recruit young girls for an Internet-based prostitution ring, after a Fort Lauderdale federal judge rejected a bid to have the charges thrown out based on unfair treatment of the defendants.
Miami attorney Joel DeFabio had claimed that the U.S. attorney’s office violated the due-process rights of his client, Johnny Saintil, 28, a Haitian American who pleaded guilty along with Stanley Wilson, 26, and Michael Defrand, 25, just before trial.
They face up to life imprisonment at their sentencing Nov. 19.
Saintil’s lawyer said prosecutors committed “selective prosecution” on the basis of race and class because they decided not to bring similar charges against a Palm Beach billionaire, Jeffrey Epstein.
U.S. District Judge William Zloch disagreed, denying the dismissal motion, which was joined by Wilson and Defrand.

Now Hedge Funder Joseph Epstein Is Being Investigated For Child Trafficking
Published: July 31, 2010
The Justice Department is investigating Jeffrey Epstein for child trafficking, The Daily Beast has learned—and has widened the scope of its probe to include a famous modeling agency.
Hedge-fund manager Jeffrey Epstein completed his sentence for soliciting prostitution with a minor last week. But it appears his problems may not be over. Now The Daily Beast has learned that:
• Federal investigators continue to investigate Epstein’s activities, to see whether there is evidence of child trafficking—a far more serious charge than the two in his non-prosecution agreement, the arrangement between Epstein and the Department of Justice allowing him to plead guilty to lower-level state crimes. Trafficking can carry a 20-year sentence.
• The FBI is also investigating Epstein’s friend Jean Luc Brunel, whose MC2 modeling agency appears to have been a source of girls from overseas who ended up on Epstein’s private jets.

A Fort Lauderdale federal judge Friday rejected a Haitian-American man’s bid to have his prostitution charges thrown out after his lawyer argued the black defendant was treated unfairly by prosecutors.
Miami attorney Joel DeFabio had claimed the U.S. attorney’s office violated the due-process rights of his client, Johnny Saintil, 28, who will stand trial Monday on charges of soliciting two young girls for an Internet-based prostitution ring.
He said prosecutors committed “selective prosecution” on the basis of race and class because they decided not to bring similar charges against a Palm Beach billionaire, Jeffrey Epstein. The 57-year-old white investor was convicted on two state charges of solicitation, served 13 months in jail and had to register as a sex offender in Florida.
U.S. District Judge William Zloch did not say why he denied Saintil’s petition, but indicated he would explain in a final written order.
