WEST PALM BEACH — A judge granted a continuance this morning for the defense in the case of a former Florida Atlantic University police officer accused of shooting a Boynton Beach woman while off duty, who later died because of her injuries.
After Jimmy Dac Ho waved his right to a speedy trial, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath accepted defense attorney Elizabeth Ramsey’s motion for more time to prepare her case.
The new trial date for Ho, who was not in court this morning, is set for Aug. 12.
At his April 8 status check, state prosecutors said their office planned to seek the death penalty against Ho.
He is charged with first-degree murder, after he was arrested for the shooting of 29-year-old Sheri Carter of Boynton Beach, an escort who advertised on a website that has factored in numerous prostitution and human trafficking investigations. Carter died four days after the shooting on Feb. 4.

Jimmy Dac Ho is scheduled to appear before Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath at 8:30 a.m. today.
The last time Ho was scheduled to appear in court April 8, however, he was not brought physically to the courthouse. His lawyers represented him instead.
At the time, the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office told Colbath that it planed to seek the death penalty against Ho, who is charged with first-degree murder, after he was arrested for the shooting of 29-year-old Sheri Carter, of Boynton Beach, an escort who advertised on a website that has factored in numerous prostitution and human trafficking investigations. It was a wise man that made the comment that good news does not sell Newspapers. You only have to read the front page of any large (and usually syndicated) paper to see that.
There are so many ‘bad stories’ that today the press is forced to cover only the very worst!
Without doubt the absolute worst story that did not get covered this week concerns a Sex Trafficking case out of Ft Lauderdale, Florida. It is easy to see the bawdy humor that might be found in a juicy bordello story, certainly the Heidi Fleiss case revealed that. But there is a seamier side to prostitution, what happens when girls as young as 14 are persuaded to join the payroll?
For a background on this sad case I suggest that you read this article.

At 1 a.m. Saturday, a task force led by the FBI arrested James “Red” Mozie, 34, of Lauderhill, and his girlfriend, Laschell “Shelly” Harris, 37, of Oakland Park.
The couple faces charges of recruiting, providing and maintaining minors for commercial sex in the house Harris rented at 2140 NW 29th St., west of Interstate 95 and Northwest 21st Avenue and south of Oakland Park Boulevard.
Mozie and Harris are in the Broward County main jail in downtown Fort Lauderdale and have detention hearings in federal court set for May 25. If convicted of the child trafficking charge, they could face sentences of 10 years to life in prison.
According to the federal criminal complaint, an investigation began in March after a tip to Broward County Crime Stoppers about minor girls working as prostitutes at the residence.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., May 25 (UPI) — West Palm Beach, Fla., is considering publishing the names of men arrested for soliciting prostitution, authorities said.
…
The city’s “loitering with the intent to commit prostitution” ordinance has been declared unconstitutional by two circuit judges. City Attorney Claudia McKenna said West Palm Beach now is trying to find new ways to curb prostitution. “It is not a criminal activity that courts particularly like, because of the potential for vague application and enforcement,” McKenna told the newspaper.
The first time the city tried to shame the clients of prostitution didn’t turn out too well, the newspaper said. Mayor Nancy Graham received national attention in 1992 when she tried a similar program.
The city placed two $1,000 ads in The Palm Beach Post. The first listed the names, ages and cities of 81 men arrested in a prostitution sweep. The city listed more men a month later, but this time with addresses and birth dates to protect men with similar names, the newspaper said.

Morning Poll: Should West Palm Beach Publish Catalogs of Prostitution Customers?
…
Azl123 Once again Commissioner Mitchell goes off half-cocked. A Local Mom If you publish the names of the women and their pimps … then you should publish the names of their customers aka JOHNS. Why should there be a double standard? Why should we protect the client who is also allegedly breaking the law? I think you should publish all names — just as it is done for other crimes. It would help curb the impulse to act — if men and women knew that their crime would be out in the open for all to see. Prostitution is NOT a victimless crime. Johns who commit these crimes do so because they think it will be hidden and that there will be no issue in the public. Let their family, friends, jobs, church all know. Prostitution is not victimless. And, lying, cheating, and stealing — are just that. Parkland man Ye …

West Palm Beach’s Possible Plan to Battle Prostitution: Print a Catalog of Customers
West Palm Beach has a prostitution problem — its city ordinance to keep hookers off street corners has been deemed unconstitutional by two courts, and the city was sued the last time it published the names of men soliciting prostitutes in a local paper.
At last night’s work session with West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio and the city commissioners, City Attorney Claudia McKenna raised two alternatives to combat prostitution: Create “prostitute exclusion zones,” or go back to publishing the names of johns on the city’s website or in print.
The commissioners tossed around the idea of putting not only the names of prostitute-renters in print but also their mug shots and addresses.
…
The other problem the city faces with publishing the names of their prostitute-soliciting dudes is what happened the last time it tried it.
