Jon Taffer is on a mission. As star of his new Spike TV reality show, Bar Rescue, the veteran nightlife expert travels the country helping revamp drinking establishments. Taffer will find out what’s working and what’s not — whether it’s changing the menu, tinkering with the music or cleaning the place of disgruntled employees. We caught up with the straight-talking, New York-born Royal Palm Beach resident about the experience:
Any major success stories that stick out in your memory?
Definitely. There was this sports bar connected to a strip club in Corona, Calif. It was a mess. The owner, Renee, was a terrific woman who I gained tremendous respect for. We converted it into something called Racks Billiards & Bourbon. It was a tough one, though. A manager got fired, a couple people walked out. Renee was in tears. I screamed and yelled more than once.

Mandell, 54, of Boca Raton, Florida, was found guilty yesterday by a federal jury in New York of all four counts he was charged with, conspiracy, securities fraud, wire fraud and mail fraud, after a trial before U.S. District Judge Paul Crotty in Manhattan.
Adam Harrington, 41, of Miami, a former broker at Sky Capital who was tried with Mandell, was convicted of the same four counts. The jury began its deliberations July 22.
Prosecutors said the evidence showed the defendants used the funds for tens of thousands of dollars of personal expenditures like private jets, luxury hotels and expensive Swiss watches.

Under an agreement between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and ICM Registry, ICM will use a portion of the fees collected to fund efforts designed to keep children away from online pornography.
“We wanted to take an innovative approach to the launch of .xxx and show best practice at all stages including investing in a global awareness campaign,” said Lawley. “While we believe the .xxx will satisfy the needs of the sponsored community, we recognise there is also an audience who would like to opt-out and safeguard their IP prior to the domain going live.”
Contentious issue
The .xxx domain was given the green light by ICANN earlier this year – in spite of warnings that it would become “the red light district of the Internet”.

Activists plan to begin gathering petitions Thursday afternoon to put the question on ballots next year.
The constitutional amendment would set up a direct conflict with federal drug law, which bans marijuana. Supporters point out that federal law bans pot for medical use, too, but 16 states now allow medical marijuana.
Supporters anticipate no trouble getting the measure on ballots. They need about 86,000 valid signatures, one of the nation’s lowest thresholds.
Colorado voters rejected a pot legalization question in 2006. The new version directs state lawmakers to add an excise tax of up to 15 percent on recreational pot, in addition to sales taxes.

Former California madam charged in South Florida stock fraud
By Peter Franceschina
Sun Sentinel
Former Hollywood, Calif., madam Michelle Braun is back in trouble with the law, charged with operating a Fort Lauderdale boiler room to defraud stock investors across the country out of $400,000.
She’s still on three years of probation for her high-class California escort operation that supplied playmates, porn actresses and models to movie stars, athletes and businessmen.
Braun, 33, did not look so glamorous in her mug shot taken at the Broward County Jail on Tuesday, where she was booked after being served with an arrest warrant. She moved to Boca Raton after her prostitution ring, which prosecutors alleged brought in more than $8 million, was broken up in 2009.
Her defense attorney, Marc Nurik, disputed the allegations in the arrest affidavit, which lays out charges of fraud, operating a boiler room and the sale of unregistered securities. Braun is alleged to have received $80,000 as the vice president of the company, Sterling Capital Trust on Southeast 20th Street in Fort Lauderdale, that allegedly sold nonexistent stock shares to investors.
