FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The former owner of a South Florida brothel known as the “Boom Boom Room” will be spending the rest of his life in federal prison for sex trafficking of minors and production of child porn.
A judge in Fort Lauderdale imposed the life sentence Monday on 35-year-old James Mozie, who was convicted on 10 charges last December.
Prosecutors say Mozie recruited girls between 13 and 17 to work as prostitutes at the brothel. Some testified at his trial that Mozie warned them not to reveal their ages to customers. Several said Mozie required them to have sex with him as part of what he called their orientation.
Testimony also showed Mozie attached sexually explicit photos of the girls to text messages he used as advertisement.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the United States District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Williams had recruited at least two girls and tried to have three others move in with him and work for him as prostitutes. All the girls were runaways under the age of 18, and all said Williams had sex with them or tried to.Police first arrived at Williams’ home on Feb. 27, according to the criminal complaint. When they arrived, no one answered the door, but the sounds of a man’s voice and a girl’s moans could be heard from outside the home.Officials burst into the home, where they found Williams trying to block them from searching the residence — yelling, swinging his arms and striking several officers before he was arrested. But the state charges brought against Williams from that February arrest were dropped even as federal officials continued their investigation. They spoke with four girls and the mother of a fifth, all of whom told investigators that Williams was r …

View Expansion of Sistrunk Blvd. in a larger map Map: Sistrunk Blvd. in purpleMay 16, 2012|By Larry Barszewski, Sun SentinelFORT LAUDERDALE — Segregation ended in this city decades ago, but Sistrunk Boulevard – historically the heart of the city’s black community – still stops near the railroad tracks. The city is considering extending the street name east of the FEC tracks and Andrews Avenue, but there’s already resistance from residents who say Sistrunk also has a negative reputation.
“If I was one of those property owners, I would be a little freaked out by it,” said Charles King, a resident of Victoria Park, which is directly across Federal Highway from the proposed extension.
“I’m from Fort Lauderdale originally. The term Sistrunk has a scary negative connotation for high crime and terrible things,” King said. “People associate it with drugs and murder and prostitution.”

Transexual and transgendered women often have difficulties with law enforcement while they’re trying to do their business in the bathroom. Last year, a transgender women was banned for life from The Cosmopolitan casino in Las Vegas from using a women’s bathroom because her ID listed her as legally male. (The casino also insinuated that she was a sex worker right off the bat.) In 2010, a transgender woman was arrested for entering the women’s bathroom at Houston library. Apparently, it doesn’t matter whether a trans women wants to read, gamble, or go to the doctor: society is afraid they’ll dirty up the lady toilets. Maybe if more than a handful of states had anti-discrimination laws that specifically dealt with gender identity, things would actually change. Until then, women like Witherspoon will likely continue to be publicly and completely unnecessarily humiliated.

The show overlooks these crucial questions. Neither does it address what seems a core concern for Living Color generally, how anyone involved thinks about the animals whose lives they’re shaping, from the clients to the aquarists. No one asks why customers might want aquariums in their homes or workplaces in the first place—though the second episode, titled “Pimp My Tank,” suggests a disenchanting answer. The show features two jobs: Mat goes to the Caribbean in search of exotic deep-sea fish for Tampa’s Florida Aquarium, while his crew scrambles to build a 3,000-gallon cylindrical shark tank for a new pet store opening. Both the clients in this episode appear driven by a desire to acquire, collect, possess, and display. In other words, they treat the fish as rare commodities, to exhibit at the Aquarium and even more dispiritingly, as decoration at the store.
