The group jokes around, and Rodriguez’s structured, but easygoing approach have allowed him to morph from intimidating police officer to an older-brother type of role model.
The teens didn’t immediately open up to Rodriguez; it took some time to build trust, he said. And he did so by opening up and sharing his own childhood stories growing up in industrial Hialeah where he arrived from Cuba in the 1980 Mariel boatlift when he was a toddler.
Rodriguez, too, had a police officer who would give him a ride home whenever he saw him stray too far from home as a kid. He, too, grew up in a neighborhood where drug sales and prostitution were prevalent.
