However, Goodman always had an eye toward polo. As a young man, he watched at a Houston polo club from the sidelines until his 20s, when he decided to take lessons.
Goodman made his fortune in the family air-conditioning business, started in 1975 by his father. He sold the company in 2004 for $1.43 billion.
About that time, polo’s future in Wellington was unclear. Enthusiasm at other polo clubs was on the wane.
“Everyone was worried about the future of polo,” said Dale Schwetz, a longtime professional polo umpire and player who has played with Goodman.
Goodman, who first heard of Wellington about 20 years ago as a polo destination, stepped in. He started with a $5 million club that seated 640 and included a beauty salon, massage parlor and swimming pool.
